The dictionary defines a scam as... "A confidence trick, confidence game, or con for short (also known as a scam) is an attempt to intentionally mislead a person or persons (known as the mark) usually with the goal of financial or other gain."

I prefer the shorter version... "A ploy by a shyster to raise money."

In the official definition, it's important to note the words "intentionally mislead" because these are the crux of whether something is a scam or not. In these section, we warn you of scams about which we have become aware. If you would like to report a scam, please don't hesitate to use our "Report-A-Scam" form.

Some Simple Rules For Safe Online Shopping
  • Never purchase from a website that doesn't display full contact information.
  • Never give out personal information except on "secure pages" (where the URL starts "https://..." - make sure that "s" is showing at the end of "http")
  • Take time to read and understand guarantees offered on a web site (whether financial or otherwise)
  • Always be sure there are clear terms of use, disclaimers and/or privacy policies easily located on the site.
  • If it sounds too good to be true it probably is... avoid web sites with outrageous promises.
  • Do not visit websites you find from receiving spam. Spam=Scam! Take the Boulder Pledge (see below)
